I think you're all making too much of this. I've used Castrol 20W-50 (probably my first choice), Valvoline and Penzoil 10W-40 for more than 20 years, with good results. Automotive grades, BTW. The bike stuff is *way* overpriced.
The only bad oil experience I've had was Mobil-1 5W-30 synthetic in my '75 VW Rabbit. One batch, and that thing was burning a quart every 200 miles. VW sent out stickers to remind you to check the oil level and every gas fillup. That car had a lot of design problems, but I still think the synthetic oil led to an early demise.
